Know Your Target Market

When I was in my 20’s I used to play recreation softball at a lighted field. There were all sorts of challenges but one night, when I was getting up to ball, I made the mistake of looking at one of those lights. I was blinded and only saw little spots. Needless to say, I could no longer see the ball.

In the same way, in business, sometimes we are so blinded by the lights, that we lose sight of our target market. Try these 3 tips for keeping your market in your sights.

1.  Know who they are! What gender are they? What do they read? How old are they? The bottom line is if you don’t know who they are, you won’t find them!

2.  Know where they are! Where do they live? Where do they hang out? In softball you have to know where the ball is to hit it. The same thing is true for business, you have to know where they are to reach them. If you don’t know where they are, you will not get any results! And if you don’t get results you will be out of business soon.

3.  Know their struggles. This is where you will really reach them. Know what keeps them up at night. Know what their pain is. Understand what weighs them down and holds them back. You have to know what they would do to relieve that pain or lessen the burden.

I am constantly working to stay clear on who my market is and to fine tune the particulars. How about you?
